Tao Island, one of diving destination in Thailand
Since the author had the opportunity to travel to Koh Tao (Toa Island) , Surat Thani Province during August 2022. Personally, I am a person who rarely has the opportunity to travel to the Thai sea because most my life, living abroad. I know just Pattaya, Rayong and Hua Hin, but as this time I promised my children that I would take them for snorkeling at the sea of Thailand.
Traveling to Koh Toa can be in many ways by planes, buses or trains, but at the end, everyone had to take a boat to get to Koh Tao. The journey may take a little longer, but that's the charm the more difficult it is, the more beautifule and attractive.
Upon reaching the island, since this time was the high season, most tourists were Europeans, Thai people is less than 10%. The first impression was that the sea was very clear. Thousands of small fish Swim back and forth at the pier which made me curious to see how beautiful all the beaches on the island will be.
Traveling in the island is recommended to rent a motorbike to drive yourself because there is no public transport. and taxis fare is quite expensive. Koh Tao has a lot of beaches to explore and each beach is special itself. Some beaches are suitable for diving. Some for swimming or sitting by the sea and watch the sunset. The author myself did not go to all beaches. I will write only where I have been.
The place I went to is Jul Juea bay, there is a small beach with high privacy and can also snorkel. Most importantly, this beach has a very peaceful sunset view.
But if looking for a long beach for swimming, a variety of restaurants, beautiful view of coconut trees suitable for photography must be Sairee beach. You can sit and eat delicious food, both Thai and Western dishes. The sunset view is beautiful too. At night, there is a fire show on the beach. You can have fun all night at the beach bar.
The beach that I like the most in this trip is Ao Leuk, with shallow water, not strong waves, gave me able to swim along the white sandy beach, or even snorkel, full of corals and groups of fish including small sharks swam to greet me all time.
On the Tao Island. You can both snorkeling and deep diving. The author myself had the opportunity to snorkel with a diving tour, which is very convenient because the complete diving equipment, lunch and snacks, drinking water are well prepared, accounted by skilled staffs who works very professionally
There are 5 big spots for snorkeling around Koh Tao and each has its own charm. I would like to tell you briefly.
1.Nang Yuan Island is a small island near Koh Tao. There is a viewpoint that can see the Thale Waek (separated sea) of Koh Nang Yuan. The beaches here are white and beautiful, with coral and fish swimming all around. There are many kinds of fish. Since the water is not too deep, very suitable for children and tourists who begin to dive.
2.Mango Bay, here, we can see thousands of fishes swimming around at the same time, it's very exciting. Anyone who is good at diving can dive all the way to a group of fish.
3.Hin Wong Bay is a bay with a lot of coral reefs. We will see coral panels which are big as a bed. They have taken many years to grow up like this. The author feels very fortunate to have the opportunity to see the nature under the sea in Thailand perfect and well preserved as this.
4.Ao Leuk has a lot of fishes and corals. Come with all kinds of things that you want to meet. So beautiful seems as diving in the aquarium of the sea. Many fishes swim back and forth,living their lives in peace and beauty in the most natural way.
5.Tian Beach or Shark Bay, it is recommended that if you want to see sharks, you must come in the morning. However, we went in the afternoon, we saw those sea turtles foraging at underwater coral fragments instead. They are very friendly as they can swim and dine in front of the surrounding crowds. Even they were close-up photo taken, they still not going anywhere.

This trip to Koh Tao opened up the author’s world view, both the integrity of the sea in Thailand that foreigners are willing to take many days to travel to see the completeness of the underwater sea which cannot be found in their countries, The author is very proud of Thailand, showing to our foreign friends that the sea of Thailand is really the most beautiful in the world. And another thing that is a new feeling what we got from diving is that we could see the peaceful underwater world where schools of fishes swim around the coral reefs. They looked like they had a perfect life. This caused the author immediately feel guilty and considerate. Humans are both disturbing the underwater world by creating pollution from the release of waste water and garbage into the sea. The author also takes the opportunity to tell my children to understand the duties of human beings to keep our world beautiful and peaceful forever, because nature is such a wonderful thing and it is powerful enough to destroy as well if we neglect proper care.
